Craig Johnson has been named chief operating officer (COO) and executive vice president of East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC).

In that position, he will oversee operation and maintenance of EKPC’s power plants and transmission infrastructure, as well as power supply and planning; engineering and construction; environmental affairs; federal and RTO (PJM) regulatory affairs; and supply chain.

“I am excited and humbled to be able to continue working with EKPC’s incredible employees,” Johnson said. “More than ever, maintaining reliable, cost-competitive electric service is vitally important for Kentucky’s homes and businesses. I’m looking forward to helping EKPC continue to meet the needs of our 16 owner-cooperatives and the 1.1 million people they serve.”

Johnson is a 36-year veteran of EKPC, serving most recently as senior vice president of power production, a position he has held since 2010. He also served as plant manager of Smith Station in Clark County, Ky.

Don Mosier, who served as the cooperative’s COO since 2010, was recently named EKPC’s next president and chief executive officer.

“Craig has great knowledge of and appreciation for EKPC’s generation and transmission infrastructure,” Mosier said. “He has planned, built, engineered and managed power plants, so he knows EKPC’s fleet inside and out. Craig’s knowledge and expertise will be invaluable as EKPC expands its capacity to meet the growing needs of our owner-members.”

EKPC has announced plans to add a new 745-megawatt unit at Cooper Station in Somerset, Ky., and to build a new 214-MW power plant near Liberty, Ky., in coming years.

Johnson has a master’s degree in mining engineering from the University of Kentucky and is a registered professional engineer in Kentucky.
